There’s a moment—sometimes quiet, sometimes desperate—when every new mom wonders: “Am I doing this right?”
It might be in the middle of a 3AM feeding, your baby snuggled into your chest while the rest of the world sleeps. Or in the pediatrician’s office, when weight checks and latch tips swirl together into a blur of pressure and uncertainty. Or while scrolling Instagram, seeing another mom make breastfeeding look so effortless in a linen robe with a sleepy, perfectly latched baby.
If you’ve ever felt like that—questioning, comparing, doubting—you’re not alone.
And that’s why this quote from my recently published book Milk’D “Finding Your Flow in the First Weeks of Breastfeeding,” means so much.
Because here’s the truth:
Breastfeeding isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s one-heart-at-a-time.
Finding your flow isn't about getting every feed "right" or fitting into some gold standard of motherhood. It's not about flawless latches, perfect schedules, or recreating the curated version of breastfeeding you’ve seen online.
It’s about tuning into your body, your baby, and your values—and discovering what feeding looks like when the pressure fades and the peace begins.
It’s about giving yourself permission to stop performing and start connecting.
Sometimes that looks like confidently nursing in public.
Sometimes it means exclusively pumping, combo feeding, or choosing to wean sooner than you expected.
And sometimes it simply means pausing in the middle of the chaos to say:
“This is working for us right now. And that’s enough.”
Most of us don’t feel like we’re “doing it right.” And that journey deserves compassion, not comparison.
Flow isn’t just some magical moment that arrives and makes everything perfect.
Flow looks different in every home and every heart. It’s in the little choices. The small wins. The grace you give yourself. It may be the moment you stop counting ounces and start watching your baby’s cues. It might be the deep breath before a cluster feed. Or the quiet confidence of saying, “We’re okay. This works for us.”
You don’t need anyone else’s map.
You’re creating your own rhythm—and that’s the flow that matters.
To not have it all figured out.
To switch things up if something’s not working.
To trust your gut.
To ask for help.
To release perfection.
To hold your baby close and say, “This is my flow, and it’s mine to find.”
Because your flow isn’t anyone else’s to define. You’re doing it- one feed, one choice, one breath at a time. And that, mama, is more than enough.π
